The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen a notable rise, embracing various facets of modern life.
There has been a surge in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for very different aspects of life.
While others find it to be intriguing and useful, others perceive it as a potential threat to employment and a means for manipulation.
In a recent incident within the Ghanaian Education System, there were reports of students allegedly leveraging AI to generate answers in the 2023 BECE.
Vice President for IMANI, Ghana Selorm Branttie characterized Artificial Intelligence as the new version of the information age which plays a pivotal role for Ghana, Africa and the world.
In an interview with Joy FM, he maintained that the development of AI has been fueled by the accumulation of vast amounts of data processed systematically within large language models.
He however highlighted some challenges that make it difficult for Ghana to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is thriving in the world now.
“The issues for us in Ghana and Africa is that one, we are not building enough data sets to feed into AI models to generate the things that are relevant to our environment.
And you find very little nuance in African views or how we think and how we process our thoughts, our language, our culture. Etc.”
To address this, Selorm Branttie expressed that there is a vital need to strategically position Ghana and Africa to become a centre for AI technology or a leading adopter, setting a benchmark for the entire continent.
On his part, a legal practitioner and the Managing Partner for Sustineri Attorneys, Richard Nunekpeku opined that it may be practically impossible for lawmakers to come to terms with regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence.
He pointed out that the practice largely revolves around adopting technologies developed by others, leaving minimal influence in their development; given AI’s extensive potential impact across all sectors of the economy,
Richard Nunekpeku therefore, called for the development of a national framework using case studies to illustrate the benefits of AI for Ghanaians.
