The Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee for Ghana’s Marine Protected Areas, Dr. Evans Kwasi Arizi, has commended government for taking swift action against illegal mining activities around the Cape Three Points Forest Reserve.
Speaking exclusively on ATL FM’s Mantaw Mu Nsem (Community Matters) programme, Dr. Arizi confirmed reports that a joint security task force had destroyed over 100 illegal mining machines and arrested several suspects.
According to him, the operation followed concerns raised by stakeholders over the threat illegal mining posed to forests adjoining the Marine Protected Area.
Dr. Arizi said the government’s response demonstrates its willingness to listen to concerns from experts and environmental stakeholders.
“That is a fact. We have received pictures and videos of the arrests that have been made. The government did not sit unconcerned after the illegal mining activities were brought to its attention. Immediate action was taken.”
Dr Arizi described the intervention as a step in the right direction but emphasised that sustained security operations are crucial to prevent illegal miners from returning.
He disclosed that plans are underway to establish security camps within the forest reserve to ensure continuous protection of the area.
The fisheries scientist further appealed to government to provide the necessary logistics and resources to security personnel to sustain the operation and safeguard the country’s Marine Protected Areas.
