The king of the Denkyira Traditional Area, Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsem IV, has announced the elevation of the Watreso Stool from an Ɔdikro Stool to a Black Stool, in recognition of the rapid growth and importance of the community within the Denkyira State.
The historic announcement was made during the 5th Akwasidae celebration held at Nkondwafieso, Jukwa, on Sunday, 19th July, 2026.
Addressing the gathering, Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsem IV emphasized that the Watreso Ɔdikro Stool belongs to the Denkyirahene and not to any particular family. He explained that individuals who had occupied the stool over the years did so as a privilege granted by the Denkyirahene through the Denkyira Abusuapanin.
The stool became vacant following the elevation of Nana Kweku Peprah from Watreso Ɔdikro to Denkyira Gyaasehene, a divisional chief of the traditional area.
During the interim period, the stool has been under the care of Safohene Ekow Kakraba, acting through his nephew, Nana Kweku Foso, who served as regent. In recognition of his dedication, loyalty and service to the Denkyira Kingdom, Nana Kweku Foso was also elevated by the Denkyirahene and installed as Gyaasuahene.
Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa Amponsem IV reiterated that the authority to appoint an occupant of the Watreso Stool rests solely with the Denkyirahene, acting through the Denkyira Abusuapanin. He announced that, now that the stool has attained Black Stool status, he will, in due course, select and enstool a deserving candidate from any family of his choice to occupy the newly elevated stool.
The announcement was received with enthusiasm by chiefs, queen mothers and members of the Denkyira State who attended the Akwasidae celebration.
