The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, George Justice Arthur, says efforts to renovate the Metro Hospital into Central Regional Hospital have received attention under the Cape Coast’s 8-year development plan.
According Mr. Arthur, foreign investors from China and Canada have expressed keen interest in financing the infrastructure project.
Speaking on ATL FM’s local current affairs show Manteaw Mu Nsem, the MCE emphasized the urgent need for a dedicated regional health facility. He noted that the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) currently operates as a tertiary referral center serving the entire country, leaving a critical gap in local primary and secondary healthcare delivery.
Mr. Arthur disclosed that the investors are seeking formal assurances from the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, to safeguard their capital investment.
Additionally he said to finalize the project scope and financial terms, a joint meeting led by Cape Coast South MP, Kweku Ricketts Hagan, and Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has been scheduled.
“The investors are seeking an assurance from the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, that the government will honour its financial commitments once they invest in the project, he said. “Fortunately, Hon. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan was in my office when the delegation arrived. After our discussions, he proposed a meeting with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in Accra on Wednesday to determine the total project cost and assess the possibility of making provision for it in the 2027 national budget. We have therefore received encouraging assurances regarding the project’s progress.”
Beyond the health sector, the MCE highlighted progress on other local industrialization initiatives, including the proposed Efutu Water Factory, which has cleared feasibility assessments and earned official Assembly approval.
“The Assembly is also pursuing the establishment of an Nsu Factory, similar to the one at the University of Cape Coast. The General Assembly has approved the project, feasibility studies have been completed, and the proposed site is at Efutu. Once established, the factory is expected to create employment opportunities and ease the burden on women involved in fetching water.”
Reassuring the public on fiscal management, Mr. Arthur confirmed that a dedicated, transparently managed account has been opened specifically to ring-fence funds for the 8-year development agenda.
