The Central Regional Health Directorate in collaboration with AYA collectives, a non-governmental organization has launched a zero-tolerance campaign in the fight against maternal mortality in the region.
This awareness campaign has become necessary due to the reoccurrence in maternal death records in the central region.
Speaking at the launch on the theme, Stop Preventable Maternal Deaths and Disabilities, the deputy director for clinical care at the Central Regional Health Directorate, Dr. Agnes Anane says although the region recorded low maternal death in 2021 there is still the need to promote its total eradication.
She, therefore, said the launch of the campaign is in the right direction to ensure maternal deaths in the region are reduced.
She said “The government is doing well in collaborating with the Ghana Health Service to reduce maternal mortality in the country so the region has also decided to launch this program. So we are meeting with the stakeholders so that at least the community will become responsible for reducing maternal mortality.”
Dr. Agnes Anane further revealed that the Regional Health Directorate has put in place measures such as revamp of the maternal audit and training of health workers to achieve zero maternal death.
For the training, she notes “we include all health workers and also use maternal audit as one of the key things we do. If a pregnant woman dies, we audit it in four (4) different zones. We also have telecommunication; we have zoned the regions with all the midwives in different facilities on that WhatsApp platform. So, if they have any issue, they discuss it on the platform even before they refer the case if needed.”
She, therefore, called for the public’s support in ensuring a zero-tolerance campaign for maternal death.
On her part, the Queen Mother of Anomabo, Nana Mbroba Dabo I in an address indicated that achieving the intended fight against maternal deaths, requires a collaborative effort among all stakeholders, especially parents.
She however called all health professionals also to exhibit high professionalism towards their patients.
Present at the meeting were queen mothers, stakeholders from churches, and the health sectors.
