The National Executive Council (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its nationwide strike on galamsey.
This comes in the wake of members’ widespread vote for the suspension of the industrial action.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 29 2024, the association remarked that it does not take the interests of its students and their parents/guardians lightly and will pursue other legal means to continue its advocacy for environmental protection.
UTAG admitted that its decision may cause disappointment in some members of the general public but reassured of their resolution and focus in its efforts to oppose all persons who will exploit the nation’s resources with wanton disregard for the law or the well-being of communities.
“We will not relent in our efforts to bring about meaningful change in the fight against illegal mining.”, part of the statement read.
The Association also expressed appreciation to its members for their continuous participation, engagement and dedication to the fight against illegal mining.
It is important to recall that the suspended strike began in early October after Organised Labour called off its intended strike as part of nationwide outrage and protests at the devastating effects of illegal mining on forest reserves and water bodies in Ghana.
