With the collaboration of ARM Technology, the Department of Physics with support from the School of Physical Sciences and the College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences at the University of Cape Coast has launched an ARM technology and Ecosystem Laboratory for the institution.

The Ecosystem laboratory is to provide support to students, researchers, faculty, developers, and Community Affiliated entrepreneurs that seek to design and build technology solutions using ARM Technology tools and ecosystem resources.

The laboratory is also aimed at helping to champion ARM-led sustainability programs and partnerships while building local stakeholder networks that are developing needed solutions to address regional problems.

Senior Director and an emerging economist at ARM-Technology, Stephen Ozoigbo says his outfit’s choice to partner with UCC stems from the name the university has earned for itself and the urge to empower the students with technological skills.

This he said is to help the students compete on a world stage.

“ARM-Technology is the world’s leading Semiconductor IP. We are behind all the world’s leading computing technology from the smallest form to the biggest satellite. Hundred percent of the human population at some point uses an ARM-Technology. We decided to partner with UCC because UCC is an institution of regional excellence and we recognize that the students of UCC should be given the opportunities to compete on a world stage” Mr. Ozoigbo said while speaking at the launch of the laboratory.

In the laboratory are world equipment around computing, varieties of computing, we have microprocessors that can do everything from basic devices to even building industrial and agricultural products.

He explained that the students will be engaged in practicality in addition to workshops, training, and virtual events.

“These are world-class sensors used in building world-classes of devices for various things. We are bringing world-class technology, world-class tools, world-class training, and in our opinion, UCC is the best place” he emphasized.

ARM is the leading technology provider of processor IP, offering the widest range of processors to address the performance, power, and cost requirements of every device.

Revealing some packages attached to the ecosystem laboratory, Mr. Stephen Ozoigbo said there could be certification programmes where students who will use the facility will have to finish a course and get certified.

He adds that students will be offered internship opportunities and also have the opportunity for better jobs, be better technologists, and build companies.

To this end, he encouraged students to fully utilize this opportunity, adding, “Come here go to arm.com, take a free course; we are here to accelerate learning and all of it is free.”

On his part, the Coordinator for Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC), Professor Benjamin Anderson said as the world is moving towards digitalization, it is important that students are given such training to prepare them with digitized knowledge.

He notes that the project will go beyond Ghana and it is expected that those who go through such training are able to cope with global digitized technology across borders.
