Mrs. Bridgette Nzima-Mensah, a counselor at the Department of Guidance and Counselling at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has shed light on anxiety disorder, describing it as a mental health condition.
She emphasized that Anxiety Disorder is characterized by excessive and persistent worry or fear that disrupts daily life, underscoring the importance of seeking help for those affected.
In an interview with ATLFMNEWS, Mrs. Nzima-Mensah explained that individuals with anxiety disorder often experience symptoms such as restlessness, difficulties with movement, trouble sleeping, and frequent heart palpitations.
“Anxiety disorder is more than just occasional worry, it can significantly impact one’s ability to function normally, People struggling with anxiety might find it hard to engage in everyday activities due to their overwhelming fears and physical symptoms.” she said
Mrs. Nzima-Mensah also discussed various causes of anxiety disorder, which include heartbreak, genetic factors, issues with the pre-frontal cortex, accidents, trauma from losing a loved one, stress, low self-esteem, and personality-related health challenges.
She added that individuals displaying anti-social behavior might be suffering from an underlying anxiety disorder, thereby urging anyone experiencing symptoms of anxiety to seek help.
Noting that support is readily available, she revealed that individuals can visit the University of Cape Coast Hospital, the University of Cape Coast Counselling Centre, or consult the counselors stationed in various University of Cape Coast Halls for free assistance.
“For those dealing with anxiety, it’s crucial to reach out for support, you can visit the UCC hospital, the UCC Counselling Centre, or consult the counselors stationed in various university halls for free assistance.” she advised.
