An unspecified number of recruits have been dismissed from security services training schools after verification by the West African Examinations Council revealed that the WASSCE results they used for their applications had been forged or altered.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak says the affected recruits will also be placed on a red list to prevent them from applying to any of Ghana’s security services in the future.

Management of the affected institutions is also considering prosecuting those found to have submitted fraudulent academic documents.

The Minister described the development as disturbing, particularly because the applicants were seeking positions in institutions responsible for enforcing Ghana’s laws and protecting the public.

WAEC Verification Exposes Forged Results

The fraudulent documents were detected after the academic results presented by the applicants were submitted to WAEC for authentication.

The verification process reportedly established that some of the WASSCE result slips had either been forged entirely or altered to make the applicants appear qualified for recruitment.

The affected individuals had already gained admission to security services training schools before the discrepancies were uncovered.

They have since been removed from training after failing the academic verification process.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said applicants should not assume that certificates submitted during recruitment would be accepted without checks.

He explained that security institutions routinely verify academic credentials with the examination bodies responsible for issuing them.

“It’s so shocking that a lot of people forged their results. I don’t know how they think that they will be employed in the Police, Prisons, Immigration, Fire Service, Narcotics Control Commission or Armed Forces, and the certificate you present won’t be checked,” he said.

“As we speak, many have been dismissed from the training because they have doctored their result slips.”

Affected Recruits Face Future Recruitment Ban

Beyond dismissal from their current training programmes, recruits found to have submitted fraudulent results are expected to be prevented from attempting to join another security institution.

The Interior Minister said their details would be placed on a red list accessible to the various security services.

The measure is intended to ensure that a person dismissed from one training school for presenting forged documents does not later apply to the Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Narcotics Control Commission or Ghana Armed Forces.

The proposed restriction means the consequences of submitting fraudulent academic results could extend beyond the current recruitment exercise and permanently affect an applicant’s ambition of pursuing a career in the security sector.

The Minister said management of the respective services had also threatened legal action against those responsible.

Any prosecution would be separate from the administrative decision to dismiss and red-list the affected recruits.

Minister Questions Integrity of Applicants

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak expressed concern that people seeking to join institutions tasked with enforcing the law had allegedly begun their careers by submitting fraudulent documents.

He said the conduct raised serious questions about the honesty and suitability of the affected applicants for positions requiring discipline, integrity and public trust.

Security personnel exercise significant authority and are entrusted with protecting lives, property and national institutions.

The Minister therefore maintained that people seeking to enter the services must demonstrate respect for the law from the recruitment stage.

He suggested that applicants who falsify academic records cannot be trusted to uphold the standards expected of security officers.

The disclosure also highlights the importance of background checks and document verification in preventing unqualified applicants from entering sensitive state institutions.

Prospective Applicants Warned

The Interior Minister advised prospective applicants to ensure that they possess the required qualifications before applying to any security service.

He cautioned candidates against altering result slips or using documents that do not accurately reflect their academic performance.

Applicants who fail to meet the stated requirements have been encouraged not to rely on fraudulent documentation in an attempt to gain admission to training institutions.

The Minister warned that such conduct would eventually be detected through verification with WAEC and could result in dismissal, prosecution and exclusion from future recruitment exercises.

He maintained that the security services would continue checking the credentials submitted by applicants to protect the integrity of the recruitment process.

Separate Mobile Phone Breaches Lead to Dismissals

The latest disclosure follows the recent dismissal of at least 10 recruits from security services training schools for breaching a directive prohibiting mobile phones during training.

According to the Minister, recruits were required to surrender their devices when they reported to their respective institutions.

The dismissed recruits were, however, found to have secretly kept mobile phones despite the prohibition.

The mobile phone cases are separate from the dismissals involving forged academic results, but both developments form part of efforts to enforce discipline within security training institutions.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak has indicated that recruits must comply with the rules and instructions governing their training if they want to remain in the services.

Security Training Standards Under Scrutiny

The revelations place renewed attention on recruitment and disciplinary standards within Ghana’s security institutions.

Academic qualification is one of the basic requirements used to determine whether applicants are eligible to enter the services, making the authenticity of submitted results critical to the credibility of the process.

Strict verification also protects qualified applicants from losing opportunities to individuals using fraudulent documents.

The Interior Ministry expects the dismissals and possible prosecutions to serve as a deterrent to future candidates considering similar conduct.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak made the disclosure during a ceremony to open classroom facilities at the Asokore Mampong Roman Catholic School.

He reiterated that applicants must meet the published requirements and comply with the rules of security training institutions throughout the recruitment and training process.
