President General of the Center of Awareness Global Peace Mission International, Professor Samuel Ato Duncan is urging all stakeholders to prioritize the wellbeing of nurses and midwives in Ghana.
According to him, nurses and midwives likewise other health professionals equally need good health and sound minds to be able to execute their duties to the maximum best.
Speaking at the 75th Anniversary Launch of the Cape Coast Nursing and Midwifery Training College(CCNMTC) held at GRNMA Hotel in Cape Coast, Prof. Duncan said nurses and midwives play a very vital role in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system hence the need to institute measures to aid in their work and to consider their interest as paramount.
“I, therefore, wish to encourage the board and the management of this great institution to incorporate activities that will ensure the general well-being of our professionals seeing the significant roles they play in the development of humanity”, he said.
To him, the chosen theme for the 75th Anniversary: 75 Years of Quality Health Training; Repositioning to Achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is apt given that midwives are the guardians of the space between life and death.
He said they are not only seen as attendants of childbirth but also of life itself.
Addressing participants at the launch, he said, “By your profession, you witness the joys and sorrows, the triumphant and struggles of the human experience for this reason every woman deserves to have the support of nurses and midwives through childbirth. Nurses play a significant role in health services delivery”.
Professor Ato Duncan added that likewise all other professions, the nursing profession has its own challenges and therefore urges the public to be circumspect in their criticisms towards nurses.
He also called on nurses and midwives to put in their maximum best to walk the path of integrity in the discharge of their duties.
“You have chosen a godly profession. See yourself as partners with God in replenishing the earth” he continued.
The anniversary
Nursing and Midwifery Training College-Cape Coast established in 1948 will hold its 75th anniversary from 20th to 27th November, 2023 on the theme: 75 years of Quality Health Training; Repositioning to Achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The principal of the College, Mrs. Jemimah Fati Ackon said the celebration is also to honor all stakeholders who have contributed to the success of the institution in diverse ways.
She reiterated that although the college has made remarkable feats over the years, it continues to face several challenges as it strives to contribute its quota to attain universal health coverage.
“Our dear college faces challenges in securing adequate funding to implement programmes to contribute towards attaining UHC, inadequate infrastructure and high cost of maintaining the existing ones, inadequate human resource personnel, stalled or delay in completing ongoing projects”, she revealed.
Donation
In a related development, Professor Ato Duncan has donated a power plant to the college to power its ICT Center and twenty thousand Ghana Cedis to support all uncompleted projects in the school.
He said the aim of the donation is to complement the work of government and to assist in the smooth running of activities of the CCNMTC.
“To address issues confronting peace, you know health is an area that actually affects peace. Peace is not just the absence of war but when you are sick you don’t have your peace. So, we have to support people who are actually helping the health services delivery in the country and this is where they are training nurses”.
