The Principal of the OLA College of Education, Dr Mrs. Regina Okyere-Dankwa has called on the Ministry of Education to help improve the conditions of service at the various Colleges of Education in Ghana.
According to her, due to the poor working conditions in the Colleges, most members of staff after upgrading their knowledge and skills base leave for other tertiary institutions where they will be given the kind of treatment due them.
A situation she described as worrying and needs immediate government intervention.
“The challenges the College has with staff of teaching is very worrying. Indeed, most of the tutors are not satisfied with the kind of condition of service they receive in the colleges that do not correspond in the end point of their hard work in achieving their academic success,” she noted.
Dr. Mrs. Okyere-Dankwa was speaking at the 14th Annual Congregation of the OLA College of Education last Saturday where Diploma certificates were conferred on 359 graduands.
In her keynote address on the theme “Teacher professionalism in the wake of Global Changes in Education”, the Director of the Institute of Education here at the University of Cape Coast Prof. Christine Adu-Yeboah urged teachers to adapt to the new trends in the Education system to be able to exhibit professionalism in the classroom where they have to teach learners from different backgrounds.
“In the wake of the current global changes in education, the teacher is expected to exhibit professionalism regardless of his gender, his social or economic capital by demonstrating ability to incorporate such devices, assessing the internet with adequate knowledge, using computer applications such as PowerPoint as well as online resources such as YouTube, WhatsApp, telegram, google classrooms and so on to facilitate learning,” she added.
The Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan oh her part, urged the graduates to exhibit exceptional qualities and make impacts that will help reduce the rising number of teenage pregnancies in the country.
“I urge you to be disciplined, hardworking, trustworthy and to engage in continuous education. Be prepared to accept challenges and postings to areas where your services will be needed most. As you are going out there, shine and impact the life of young girls you are going to teach so that you help the country to stop the menace of teenage pregnancy that is engulfing us.”
