President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a special support fund to secure the future of the children left behind by the eight heroes who perished in the Adansi Helicopter Crash.
The initiative, unveiled at the state funeral in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025, will cover the children’s education from basic to tertiary level, healthcare including medical insurance and specialised treatment, and essential welfare such as clothing, shelter, and daily living expenses.
According to President Mahama, the fund will cater for educational expenses from basic to tertiary or technical training, healthcare including medical insurance and specialised treatment, as well as essential welfare such as clothing, shelter, and living expenses.
He explained that the move was inspired by Ghana’s enduring spirit of collective responsibility.
“We Ghanaians live in a culture that upholds collective responsibility, especially where community and family are concerned. Often, we meet and ask about another’s child, and in so doing, claim that child as ours,” the President stated.
Drawing a parallel with the humanitarian legacy of the late Minister of Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, President Mahama recalled how he personally funded the medical care of a nine-year-old disabled boy named Seto to enable him to walk again without a wheelchair.
“That is the spirit we must carry forward to care for these children,” he noted.
To kick-start the initiative, Stanbic Bank has pledged GHS 500,000 as seed money, while Government will also make an immediate contribution.
The President further announced that a detailed operational framework for the Fund will be published within the next 30 days, with annual public reporting to ensure transparency.
“My office will ensure that the Children’s Support Fund is sustained for the long term with annual public reporting on how it has been used,” he intimated.
He called on citizens, corporate organisations, professional bodies, and international partners to contribute to the Fund.
“Imagine the impact it will have on these children to know that the whole nation stands with them. Just as Omane told Seto, we must also assure them: you are not alone, you’ve got us, and we’ll always be there to share,” he said.
