The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced preparations to protest on Wednesday, July 10, against the recently imposed 5% excise tax on domestically manufactured plastics.
The Association, which represents local industrial players, sent a weekly appeal to the government on June 27 demanding the immediate suspension of the tax, stating that if their requests are not satisfied, they will shut down production for seven days to express their dissatisfaction.
Speaking during a news conference, the Association’s President, Ebbo Botwe, emphasized the need for the government to reconsider its position and asked for continued interaction with all stakeholders to avoid the severe economic consequences of the scheduled production shutdown.
However, the government has failed to meet the Association’s demand, prompting the rally.

The GPMA, in a statement issued on Monday, July 1, announced the protest in partnership with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and the Ghana Plastic Sellers Association.
Over 400 people are anticipated to participate in the demonstration, which will begin from the Obra spot in Circle and culminate at the Accra Technical University and the Ministry of Finance.
The Association urges all members to participate in the demonstration so that their issues may be addressed.
