In a surprising development ahead of the Council of State elections scheduled for Tuesday, 11th February 2025, Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI has announced his withdrawal from the race, citing personal reasons.
In an interview on ATL FM’s Mantew Mu Nsem, the Omanhen of the Mankessim Traditional Area explained that he decided to withdraw because a member of the Regional House of Chiefs would be chosen to represent the region, making his candidacy unnecessary.
He indicated that at the time of the interview on Friday, February 7, he was yet to submit a formal letter to the Electoral Commission expressing his decision to step down.
This announcement comes just days before the election, prompting discussions about its potential impact on the electoral process and the remaining candidates.
Osagyefo Amanfo Edu VI maintained that he is not lending his support to any of the other candidates in the race.
The Council of State serves as an advisory body to the President, and its composition is crucial for effective governance.
The upcoming elections aim to fill regional representative positions, with candidates from across the country vying for a seat on the council.
It is a pivotal aspect of Ghana’s democratic process, ensuring that diverse regional perspectives are represented in national decision-making.
The withdrawal of a candidate highlights the dynamic nature of the political landscape and the personal considerations that often influence public service aspirations.
The other candidates for the Central Region bid are; Nana Obokomatta; a civil engineer with an MBA in Strategic Management, Ogyeedom Nana Obranu Kwesi Atta; Nana Okutsekupong V, and a businessman, Francis Edjaku Donkoh.
The rest are Habib Mohammed, who has a Master’s degree in Governance, Decentralisation and Law; Seth Festus Appiah, a banker and an internal auditor with a degree in Accounting; Hakeem Addae, a miner with a Diploma in Environmental Health and Safety, and Dr Alexander Fiifi Ghartey, a lecturer.
The only woman, Hannah Cudjoe, holds a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies and is also an administrator.
