Member of Parliament for Offinso South, Isaac Yaw Opoku, has expressed disappointment in the NDC-led administration over what he describes as a failure to honor its campaign promise of significantly increasing cocoa prices.
Speaking on Peace FM, the MP said the government had pledged in its 2024 manifesto to raise the cocoa producer price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵6,000 per tonne, a 70% increase.
However, a press release issued by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) on Wednesday, April 9, signed by the Acting Deputy Chief Executive of Operations, Dr. James Kofi Kutsoati, announced that the current producer price would remain unchanged, despite a recent increase in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire.
Mr. Opoku noted that the news will come as a major disappointment to cocoa farmers who had high expectations following the NDC’s campaign commitments.
“Farmers will be very sad and disheartened by this development,” he said, urging the government to take immediate steps to address the concerns of cocoa producers.
COCOBOD, however, assured stakeholders that it would consider a review of producer prices, fees, and margins ahead of the 2025/2026 cocoa season.
