The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has voiced strong opposition to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
At a press conference held earlier today, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, stated that the NPP’s candidate, Hon. Akua Afriyie, won the original election and therefore, the party sees no justification for a rerun.
“We won clearly in Ablekuma North,” he said, emphasizing that the party is committed to upholding the directive of the court, which he claims did not mandate a rerun.
According to Mr. Kodua, a January 4, 2025 court ruling directed the Electoral Commission to compile and declare the election results, with security provided by the Ghana Police Service.
He stressed that the court’s instructions were specific and did not include any directive for a new election, noting “The court made it clear, go, collate, and declare the results of Ablekuma North, not organize a rerun,” he asserted.
Mr. Kodua further described the EC’s actions as unlawful and a breach of the court’s order, emphasizing that the NPP is prepared to return to court to seek justice, armed with what he described as “undeniable and overwhelming evidence” of their victory in the constituency.
“We consider this act by the Electoral Commission as contempt of court. It’s illegal, unacceptable, and we will challenge it,” he added.
He concluded by urging the Electoral Commission to comply with the court’s ruling and complete the collation process to officially declare Akua Afriyie as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
“We are calling on the EC, led by Madam Jean Mensa, to obey the directive of the court, complete the collation, and declare our candidate as the duly elected MP for Ablekuma North,” he said.
The NPP’s stance adds another layer of tension to the already contentious parliamentary results in the constituency, with both legal and electoral implications looming.
