MTN Ghana has dismissed speculation that it may leave the Ghanaian market following concerns over xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa

The company has assured customers and stakeholders that it remains firmly committed to Ghana’s long-term development.

Responding to a question during the MTN Regional Media and Stakeholder Forum for the Western and Central Regions held in Takoradi on Wednesday, Chief Internal Audit and Forensic Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, stated emphatically that MTN’s investments and contributions to Ghana demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the country.

“I can say with authority that MTN is invested in Ghana,” Mr. Gbewonyo said. “We’re a Pan-African organization, so please disabuse your minds of the fact that you wake up one day and MTN is gone. We ain’t going nowhere.”

His remarks came amid discussions on whether recurring xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa could affect MTN Ghana’s operations.

Mr. Gbewonyo explained that MTN’s extensive investments, employment opportunities and support for businesses and communities across Ghana underscore the company’s deep roots in the country.

He noted that MTN directly employs thousands of Ghanaians while supporting countless others through businesses, partnerships and community development initiatives, making the company an integral part of Ghana’s socio-economic landscape.

Earlier in his keynote address, delivered as part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, Mr. Gbewonyo reaffirmed the company’s commitment to responsible business practices, digital inclusion and national development.

Speaking on the anniversary theme, “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” he said the company’s remarkable growth over the past three decades has been made possible through the trust and support of customers, partners, communities and stakeholders.

Reflecting on Ghana’s telecommunications journey, he observed that services once regarded as a luxury have become an essential part of everyday life, transforming communication, business, education and financial inclusion.

According to him, innovations such as Mobile Money have revolutionised financial transactions, while continuous investments in digital infrastructure have expanded opportunities for individuals, businesses and institutions across the country.

Mr. Gbewonyo stressed that accountability, transparency and customer satisfaction remain at the core of MTN Ghana’s operations.

«”Progress is not only about growth. It is about trust,” he said, adding that the confidence reposed in MTN by millions of Ghanaians continues to inspire the company to deliver innovative and reliable services.»

Highlighting MTN Ghana’s contribution to national development, he disclosed that the company contributes approximately six per cent of Ghana’s total tax revenue while making significant investments in digital infrastructure and innovation.

He also highlighted the impact of the MTN Ghana Foundation, noting that thousands of young people have benefited from scholarships and educational support, while investments in healthcare, education and economic empowerment have positively transformed communities across the Western and Central Regions and other parts of the country.

Mr. Gbewonyo further commended the media and other stakeholders for their continued partnership, acknowledging their role in promoting public awareness, providing constructive feedback and helping MTN improve its products and services.

As MTN Ghana marks three decades of operations, he, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to connecting more people, empowering businesses, bridging the digital divide and contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s digital transformation.

With a firm assurance to customers and stakeholders, Mr. Gbewonyo concluded that MTN Ghana remains focused on the future and has no intention of exiting the Ghanaian market.

“MTN is invested in Ghana. We ain’t going nowhere,” he reiterated.
