The Kingdom of Morocco has donated 2,000 metric tons of fertilizer to Ghana as part of efforts to support the government’s flagship “Feed Ghana” program.
The donation was officially handed over at a brief ceremony held in Accra.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, expressed the government’s appreciation for the timely gesture, describing it as a strategic boost to the agricultural sector at a time when many farmers are struggling with access to key farming inputs.
“Fertilizer is one of the most important inputs we need,” he said. “Over the past few months, a lot of our farmers have been crying out for fertilizers. Today, we are delighted that you are handing this over to us.”
The donation, he noted, will play a critical role in supporting the Feed Ghana initiative, which aims to increase food production, strengthen food security, and create employment across the agricultural value chain.
Highlighting the need for improved productivity, Mr. Dumelo cited underperformance in key crops such as rice and maize, explaining “In our rice sector, Ghana produces only about 3 to 4 tons per hectare, when we should be producing around 7 to 8. The story is similar with maize and tomatoes.”
He further emphasized the importance of farming efficiency, beyond just fertilizer access, urging the Moroccan government to assist Ghana in enhancing irrigation systems and post-harvest management.
“We want to move toward all-year-round farming to keep food prices stable. But we must also address post-harvest losses, which account for 30 to 40 percent of what we produce,” he said.
Mr. Dumelo also extended gratitude to Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, who played a pivotal role in securing the donation.
“We thank the Honorable Minister for Foreign Affairs, and we hope he travels more because every time he travels, he brings us more farming inputs.”
The donation from Morocco comes at a critical time as Ghana intensifies efforts to revamp its agricultural sector and reduce dependence on food imports.
