Microsoft is testing a new feature in Windows 11 designed to enhance laptop battery life. This adaptive energy saver mode will automatically enable or disable the main energy saver setting based on the device’s workload rather than just its remaining battery life.
Currently, the energy saver mode in Windows 11 dims the display by 30%, disables transparency effects, and halts background app activity. Non-essential Windows updates are paused, and apps like OneDrive, OneNote, and Phone Link may not sync fully while this mode is active.

The new adaptive energy saver mode, available only on battery-powered devices, will operate without altering screen brightness, making it less noticeable on laptops, tablets, and handhelds.
“Adaptive energy saver is an opt-in feature that automatically adjusts energy saver settings based on the device’s power state and current system load,” explained Microsoft’s Windows Insider team. Testing has recently begun with Canary Channel Windows 11 users, and the feature is expected to roll out later this year.
While this adaptive mode won’t be available for desktop PCs, Microsoft introduced the main energy saver mode for all PCs last year, allowing desktops to conserve electricity as well.
