A five-day capacity-building workshop aimed at enhancing media excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (ST&I) reporting has commenced in Accra, bringing together 30 selected journalists from across Ghana.
The workshop, which began on Monday, February 24, 2025, seeks to deepen journalists’ understanding of ST&I topics, sharpen their reporting skills, and promote ethical journalism in the field.
It is being organized by the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in collaboration with the UK International Development and the British High Commission in Accra.
Speaking at the event, Richard Sandall, Development Director at the British High Commission, highlighted the growing influence of science and technology stories in shaping Ghana’s future.
He emphasized the need for journalists to keep pace with rapid advancements in these fields stating, “The pace of change seems to be accelerating, and it’s incumbent on us to keep up. Science and technology are redefining economies, societies, employment, and how we tackle global challenges like climate change and energy.”
Mrs. Linda Asante Adjei, Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), acknowledged the challenges journalists face when reporting on ST&I due to complex scientific concepts, fast-evolving technologies, and ethical considerations.
She stressed the importance of continuous learning and collaboration with experts to enhance accurate reporting, revealing “Journalists must seek opportunities to build their scientific knowledge through workshops like this, collaborations with researchers, and access to credible scientific databases.”
Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL KNUST, reiterated KNUST’s commitment to ensuring the success and sustainability of the initiative.
He revealed plans to institutionalize the workshop as a short course at the university noting, “This workshop presents a rare opportunity for media practitioners and scientists to work closely together, ensuring that research findings are effectively communicated to the public.”
The workshop aims to bridge the gap between the media and the scientific community, ensuring accurate and impactful reporting on science, technology, and innovation in Ghana.
