John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed his disapproval of the government’s decision to allocate funds for free tablets to senior high school students.
During a special public lecture at the Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, he criticized this move, suggesting that it is designed to sway votes rather than address critical educational needs.
Mahama highlighted the government’s diversion of resources towards providing tablets to students while neglecting essential ongoing educational projects.
According to him, prioritizing state resources to tackle urgent issues within the education sector is essential.
The former President questioned the decision to focus on distributing tablets rather than addressing the lack of textbooks in basic schools over the past four years.
In his address, Mahama pointed out the timing of the tablet distribution, noting that pre-tertiary students receiving the devices are likely to register to vote soon portraying the tablet initiative as a strategic move to influence student voters.
“The pre-tertiary students are going to register in May because some of them will be turning 18 years and above, some are 18 already and they are going to be the ones voting. So this is a gift to entice them to vote for the current government.,” he continued.

He expressed that the allocation of GH¢1.3 billion towards providing laptops to the students reflects misplaced priorities, adding that other critical needs in the educational system require funding.
