The Ghana Police Service’s Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) has detained three individuals in connection with the alleged theft of a newborn under the age of one week.
The suspects, Magdalene Nana Adwoa Boafo, 28, Faustina Binney, 32, and Eunice Koomson, 36, a teacher, reportedly removed the infant from its mother, Ms Abigail Addison, 29, on the grounds that it had an illness a few days after delivery and needed to be treated by a specialist.
According to Ms Addison, the major suspect, Adwoa Boafo, approached her while she was eight months pregnant and offered to help her financially.
The suspect later described the others as assistants, who moved her from Ofaakor-Jei River to a leased flat in Lamptey, a suburb of Adam Nana in Kasoa, and continued to support her until she gave birth at the Kasoa Polyclinic on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
Following the delivery, the suspects who claimed the infant had suffered an illness presented another lady as a medical staff member at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital who would transport the baby to the institution for treatment.

A few days later, the suspects informed Ms Addison that her baby had died, but she disagreed and reported the incident to the police.
Mrs. Doris Laryea, the Kasoa DOVVSU Commander and Deputy Superintendent of Police, led a squad to arrest Adwoa Boafo, who originally claimed the kid was dead but subsequently acknowledged to being alive after intense interrogation.
She took officers to Gbawe, where the infant was discovered alive.
All three accused are being processed for court today, July 22.
