The Ghana Shippers Authority conducted an awareness training for exporters, importers, and their intermediaries on maritime cargo insurance.
Marine insurance reduces the risk of possible losses and damages on cargo both at sea and on land at a fraction of the cost.
Acts 724 of 2006 created the legislation regulating the sector and obligated industry participants in international commerce to follow home insurance rules and regulations.
Mr. Charles Darling Asiedu Sey, the Takoradi Branch Manager of the Authority, said at the start of the event that the training was held in response to many complaints from customers about the Sector.
“The Authority is inundated with complaints concerning the loss of cargo, damage to cargo and non-arrival of cargo”.
He went on to say that the amount of maritime Borne commerce was large enough to warrant attention to that sector in order to cope with the many difficulties and dangers, including the well-known hazards of sea transit.
Mr. Sey advised shippers to get Marine Cargo Insurance in order to transfer risks and difficulties to specialist risk-bearing underwriters.
As a result, the workshop would expose them to the sector in order for them to comprehend, debate unique problems related to claims, and promote the need for marine insurance policies to safeguard shippers’ interests.
Mrs. Getrude Ohene Asienim, a Consultant, and Micheal Mawufemor Dzikunu, a Lecturer, guided participants through the different sessions in question.
In the case of marine cargo insurance, concerned parties must promptly notify the insurer of any loss, damage, or shortfall, as well as write to all carriers to put them on notice of claim.
Meanwhile, there were deadlines for notifying the carrier of loss, damage, or non-delivery.
To avoid loss and damage during regular transit and handling, the consignor is responsible for the following: appropriate packing, correct markings on the packaging, proper description of the shipping documents, and compliance with all current tariff and shipping laws.
