Musician Safo Newman caught everyone off guard when he released his first single, Akokoa, at the end of the previous year. He quickly gained popularity on social media and accumulated a sizable number of streams on multiple platforms.
His supporters and music lovers thought the song had progressed and should be acknowledged, and they hoped it would be included in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nomination list this year.
Nevertheless, excitement gave way to shock upon the announcement of this year’s TGMA nomination list, as Akokoa was not even able to claim a slot in the Unsung category, despite endorsements from notable figures in the business like rapper Sarkodie.
Safo Newman responded to the rejection by telling Graphic Showbiz in a conversation last Friday, May 17, that he was unfazed despite his initial feelings of sadness.
Safo Newman emphasized that he was dedicated to making meaningful music that connects with listeners despite the setback and that he shouldn’t be deterred by “just one snub.”

Although he was grateful for the exposure, he claimed that it was not his main reason for making music.
“When I filed for nomination for TGMA, an insider told me my song did not fit the criteria for selection. So yeah, I expected a brush off. It did not come as a surprise to me though.”
“Some songs are so unique that they fall outside of award schemes. The world needs such songs so I am not bothered at all by the snub at all. In fact, it is a motivation for me to work harder.”
“I’ll be doing good music without pressure. We’re just putting in the works and if it gets recognised, thanks to Jah, but that is not my main motive. Awards are not my reason for doing music. I want to do songs that can make lasting impact on everyone,” he revealed.
