The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Sam George has voiced strong objections to what he perceives as deliberate hindrances by some Majority members to the progress of the Anti-LGBT bill.
The bill, which has sparked considerable debate, has been languishing in Parliament since its introduction in 2021 and is currently stalled at the consideration stage.
Efforts by Sam George, a key proponent of the bill, to advance it to the House floor have been consistently unsuccessful.
Yesterday, Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Lydia Alhassan, indicated that there was ample time before Parliament’s recess to address the bill.
She noted the absence of the Committee Chairman, who had proposed an amendment to the bill, due to indisposition.
However, in a press conference following the adjournment of the house, Sam George expressed his frustration with the further delay, calling it untenable.
He alleged that some MPs from the Majority side are being influenced by pro-LGBT campaigners to obstruct the bill’s progress.
“We are very well aware of people in leadership on the majority side who are reaching out to sponsors of the bill asking us to step down the bill. Is that why the majority side is fighting against the bill?” he questioned.
Sam George warned of potential repercussions, stating his readiness to publicly name those involved if the bill encounters further obstacles.
He criticized the given excuse for the delay, highlighting that the absence of the committee chairman should not impede the bill’s progress, a practice he claims is not customary in the house.
Sam George stressed that “This is the third time the speaker has given such an instruction and it has been disregarded in his absence. We need to understand from the majority side what their issues with the bill are. We need to understand those who take the chair when the speaker gives the instruction what their position on the bill is,”
To him, the excuse provided for not taking the bill amendment today is considered unusual given the typical practices observed within the House.
