Female Journalists for Women and Rural Development in Africa (FJ-WoRDA) has called on government to establish at least one survivor’s shelter in each region to provide safety, protection, and rehabilitation for victims of domestic and gender-based violence.

They emphasized that mainly women and children among abused persons lack access to safe places where they can seek refuge and support.

“It is time for concrete action to address this critical gap” they said.

In a statement issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day, on March 8 and signed by the Executive Director, Shirley Asiedu-Addo, FJ-WoRDA urged government to take expedite action on critical inventions for women and children.

They are also asked government to ensure the promise made to establish a Women’s Bank is fulfilled, stressing that women continue to face major challenges in accessing financial resources.

“Access to financial resources remains a major challenge for many women, particularly those in rural areas, and the establishment of this bank will provide economic empowerment, benefiting not just women but families and communities,” part of the statement read.

Additionally, the FJ-WoRDA called on government to prioritize the underprivileged children especially in the rural areas under the school feeding programme and to restructure the programme to ensure no child is deprived of education due to hunger.

They argued that nutrition plays a key role in learning and development.

“On this International Women’s Day, we renew our commitment to advocating for policies and initiatives that uplift women and rural communities. We call on all stakeholders, including; government, civil society, and the private sector to work together to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.”

FJ-WoRDA used the occasion of the International Women’s Day Celebration to congratulate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on her election as vice president noting that her achievement serves as an inspiration to women across the nation and reaffirms that women can attain the highest positions in every sphere of life.
