A family of seven, including five children between the ages of 1 and 15, have perished in a tragic fire incident which occurred in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
The other two victims are believed to be the mother of the children and her eldest daughter.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) indicate that the husband of the deceased woman allegedly set the bedroom ablaze and locked it from the outside before fleeing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the GNFS indicated that the Dunkwa-On-Offin Fire Station received a distress call at 1:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 1:20 a.m.
According to them, the fire had engulfed one of the bedrooms in a four-bedroom house, which was found padlocked from the outside. The firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 1:32 a.m., which prevented it from spreading to the other rooms.
Although the firefighters responded swiftly, the seven victims who were trapped in the locked room perished in the fire.
The body of the suspect husband was later discovered in a nearby bush, where he is believed to have taken his own life.
The charred remains of the victims were handed over to the Ghana Police Service at Atekyim for further investigations.
Meanwhile, the GNFS is urging citizens to report fire outbreaks immediately they occur by contacting the nearest fire station or dialling emergency numbers: (112 / 0201500360 / 0302772446).
This is to enable firefighters to respond swiftly and save lives and properties.
