The Ghana Water Company Limited says the instability in power supply is a major cause for the recent disruption of water supply to parts of the Cape Coast metropolis.
Attributing the recent shortage of water within the Cape Coast metropolis and Elmina Township to the frequent power outages, the Public Relations Officer, Ghana Water Company for Central and Western Regions, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie explained that the company is unable to produce or treat water for distribution with the intermittent power cuts.
He also emphasized that there is a high demand for water supply due to the dry season which is increasing pressure on them.
Meanwhile, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie expressed that there is no instance of water rationing in the region and it is expedient for the public to report water shortage within their communities to the Ghana Water Company should they encounter any challenges anytime aside from planned maintenance by the company.
“The major problem we are facing is the unstable power regime. Sometimes power will go off and as long as the power interruption lasts, we will not be able to produce. Once a Sekyereheman is on, Bremso may also be off. You know, these are the two plants that serve Cape Coast Metropolis and Elmina township,” he said.
Nana Yaw Barnie also attributed the High cost of treatment of water due to water pollution as a cause for the disruption of water supply within some parts of the metropolis.
He said the Ghana Water Company is facing significant financial challenges due to outstanding debts owed by customers, amounting to several millions of cedis. These debts impact the company’s ability to function, as it relies on customer payments to support its operations, including importing necessary chemicals for water treatment.
“Now we use a chemical called polyelectrolyte or polymer and that polymer is four times more expensive than Alum. Ghana Water Company is having to spend much more money in treating water and we expect that our customers will pay their best so we are empowered to do all the things we need to do.”
Consequently, the company is strongly urging its customers to fulfil their financial obligations to enable the company to continue providing essential services.
