The Central Regional Minister, Mr. Kwamena Duncan has hinted that the services of the Police will be engaged in ensuring the maximum compliance of the wearing of nose masks in the various Senior High Schools(SHS).

He made this remark when he visited some selected senior high schools in the region to observe how authorities were receiving the final year and gold track form two students as they returned from their unintended break due to the COVID 19.

On May 31, President Akufo-Addo in his televised address announced the reopening of educational institutions including Universities for final year students and also second-year Gold Track students to complete their academic work for the academic year.

Per the directive, schools were to reopen for final year SHS and second year Gold Track students on Monday, June 22 2020.

Together with the Regional Health Director Dr. Akosua Owusu Sarpong, the Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service Mrs Martha Agyeman, the regoinal police commander COP Paul Manly Awini, the team toured seven schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The regional minister who was quite pleased with his observation said he believes the Region will be able to manage any case should there be one.

“In fact, that regional director of Education has done series of meetings, the Regional director health service has also done same and they have both sensitized every single stakeholder. The district directors, whether education or health have all being sensitised. They have done all the simulations. Simulation, first at the facility then at the school. If there was ever a case, we would be able to surmount”, he said.

At the time the team visited the St. Augustine’s College; processes had commenced to receive the students with strict adherence to all safety hygienic protocols. This included the taking of details of others such as drivers and relatives who reported with students.

The situation at the Wesley Girls High School was no different as they were equally doing same, regarding the adherence to the protocols. They had also initiated extra measure whereby the girls after entering their various houses had to first take their bath and wash their travel clothes before unpacking their stuffs.

However, at the Academy of Christ the King at Abura Newsite, management indicated it would be going the extra mile of regularly checking the temperature of the day students as they arrive every day from their homes and also ensure that these students observe all the necessary protocols as they move from their homes to the school. This becomes crucial as the school, which is predominantly a day school does not have enough accommodation facility to house all the students.

Also, at the Adisadel College, Aggrey Memorial, Mfantsipim School and Holy Child School, the schools’ authorities were fully prepared to receive the students as they COVID protocols were observed. But students’ turnout was very low at the Adisadel College at the time of the visit.

In an interaction with the team, the schools mentioned they had received all items government promised to deliver, including thermometer guns, nose masks, hand sanitizers and veronica buckets.

All the schools had also designated some spaces to be used as isolation center in case of any eventuality.

The regional minister expressed satisfaction with the observation of the schools’ preparedness, and added that for the time being, visits to senior high schools in the region will be on a regular basis by any of them.
