The Elmina Polyclinic in the Central Region is seeking to expand into a fully-fledged hospital by calling for the establishment of an ultra-modern accident and emergency block.
Currently, the clinic offers a range of primary healthcare services but seeks expansion to enable it to handle severe emergencies, particularly from traffic accidents.
The Elmina Polyclinic, located at the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) municipality is along the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway, part of the Trans Togoland Highway which has not been spared of the fatal highway traffic accidents that claim countless lives and leave others maimed for life.
This among other reasons prompted the need for an expansion line with its 50th anniversary celebration recently launched to be climaxed in September 2024.
The Media and Publicity Coordinator of the 50th-anniversary celebration committee, Mr. Ezekiel Quarshie, mentioned that as part of the expansion, a theatre is being constructed and is almost completed at the clinic with support from the MCE of Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA), Solomon Ebo Appiah.
He commended the MCE and his team for their support, emphasizing the continuous need for support from all and sundry to expand the facility to serve the KEEA municipality better.
In an interview with ATLFMNEWS, Mr. Quarshie expressed that the hospital needs to promptly attend to the sick, especially accident victims on the highway, and at sea.
“The Elmina Polyclinic is at a very strategic position on the highway. So, we want an accident and emergency centre that can save lives in case an accident occurs on the highway… We have often referred patients with critical conditions to other hospitals due to the lack of such facilities. So, we believe such an expansion would help reduce these referrals thereby saving lives,” he continued.
Mr. David Nii Okpoti Odoi, the fundraising coordinator of the anniversary committee explained the importance of the theme to the celebration which he says highlights the desire for the expansion of the Elmina Polyclinic.
The theme for the anniversary celebration is ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Health Service Delivery, The Challenges, Prospects and the Way Forward in a Dynamic Society.
He highlighted the need for reflection on the clinic’s successes and challenges to chart the way forward.
“Healthcare delivery of the past is not the same today, so we must make efforts to ensure we deliver prompt healthcare delivery without referring patients to distant facilities. These facilities are already burdened with many patients. On September 24 during the grand durbar of the 50th anniversary, we encourage everyone to support the clinic’s legacy project.
