President Akufo-Addo has rolled out plans to commission the Kumasi Airport renamed Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport on May 10, 2024.
President Akufo-Addo, together with figures like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, and Yvonne Nana Afiriyie Opare, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited, will be present for the inauguration.
Plans have also been put in place to expand the runway and replace old facilities with more modern structures once the usage of the new terminal begins.
During a recent tour of the Airport with Ghana Airport Company Limited Management, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress.
He further stressed the need to maintain the facility well to ensure its long-term utility and contribution to the socio-economic well-being of the Ashanti Region and Ghana.
The project has received praise from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, especially for its ability to create jobs and boost the local economy due to the vibrant economic activities in the Ashanti Region.
The second phase of the airport development, which began in 2018, involves building a new terminal to handle one million passengers annually, two boarding bridge installations, and the construction of additional infrastructure such as a road network, perimeter fence, a substation, and a parking lot.
With a capacity to serve 800,000 passengers annually, it aims to take care of the growing expectation of air travel, especially from the northern and middle regions of Ghana.
The airport is also expected to commence its full operation in June 2024, shortly after the official opening.
The Ghana Airport Company Limited is currently the manager of the airport and is undergoing final equipment tests to handle both domestic and international flights.
