Authorities investigating the murder of rapper Kiernan Forbes, also recognized as AKA, have stated that KwaZulu-Natal businessman Mfundo Gcaba will not be detained due to the absence of solid evidence directly implicating him in the crime, as disclosed by a senior police investigator preferring anonymity.
AKA and his companion Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were fatally shot outside Wish restaurant in Durban last year.
Numerous individuals, among them Muziwethemba Gwabeni, were apprehended and accused in connection with their homicide.

Gwabeni, identified as a taxi operator, allegedly received R800,000 to compensate the assailants responsible for the deaths of the two individuals.
During their investigation, the police revealed that it was Gcaba who transferred the substantial sum into Gwabeni’s account. Gwabeni allegedly disbursed over R133,000 to each suspect for executing the hit.
A knowledgeable police officer involved in the Forbes murder inquiry indicated that connecting the seven defendants to the crime was straightforward as they had collaborated closely and were also connected through phone communications.
Furthermore, the officer mentioned that the accused individuals had previously faced joint charges in other incidents.
However, the officer clarified that presently, establishing a direct connection between Gcaba and the murders was unfeasible.
“The monetary transaction and the two calls exchanged between him (Gcaba) and Gwabeni do not provide adequate grounds for arrest or interrogation,” stated the officer.
He further added: The police want to establish a motive and on whose instructions Gwabeni was acting. We believe there are more powerful people involved here,” the police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
