Today, Wednesday, August 18, 2021, a group calling itself the “Aggrieved Public Sector Workers” will hold a protest in Accra.
The organization is protesting the government’s planned 4% wage increase for public sector employees, as well as what it considers terrible working conditions and the overall high cost of living.
Instead, the organization would want to see a 25% rise in public sector wages.
The Ghana Police Service has promised to ensure security during the demonstration.
The Service claims that sufficient security measures have been put in place to guarantee a trouble-free protest.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at the Obra Spot and go along Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, Cedi House, and Independence Square.
The police, in a press release issued by DSP Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, urged protestors to follow all COVID-19 procedures.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the public that sufficient security measures have been laid up ahead of the Aggrieved Public Sector Workers Demonstration planned for Wednesday, August 18, 2021.”
“Following talks with the protest’s conveners, it has been decided that the demonstration would begin at Obra Spot and proceed along Kwame Nkrumah Avenue towards Fariso Traffic Light, Cedi House, AU Roundabout, and finish at Independence Square.”
The police will also take all necessary precautions to guarantee the protesters’ safety, according to the statement.
“The police will guard the event routes and take all necessary precautions to guarantee the security and safety of all demonstrators.”
