The Minority Leader in parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has expressed his dissatisfaction over the absence of the Central Bank Governor to receive their petition during the Occupy Bank of Ghana Demonstration.
He described the absence of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Eddison and his two deputies to receive the petition of the demonstration as a gross disrespect to him as the leader and the entire Minority Caucus in parliament.
Dr. Ato Forson made this comment when the head of security of the BoG was tasked by the Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana to receive the petition from the Demonstrators led by the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
To him, the absence of Dr. Eddison nor his two deputies constitute a total disrespect to the Minority in parliament. “I feel very disrespected as the leader of the opposition in parliament for a simple reason that we demanded to present a petition to the Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Ghana.
The Governor has two deputies namely; deputy one and deputy two. Unfortunately, he has decided to disrespect us and his two deputies have also decided to disrespect us by not being here to receive our petition”. He therefore refused to present the petition to the head of security of BoG who showed up to pick the petition on behalf of the Governor, citing him as not being responsible for the mismanagement of the BoG.
“We never said we are going to present our petition to the head of security. They have actually mismanaged the affairs of the Central Bank. They have mismanaged the monetary policy. Today, Ghana our beloved country is on its knees. You are not responsible and we will not give you our petition”, he told the head of BoG security.
Dr. Ato Forson also revealed that the Central Bank led by the Governor has unilaterally printed up to 80 billion Ghana Cedis within two years without recourse to parliament and written off 48 billion cedis being government’s debt.
According to him, BoG is technically bankrupt with a negative equity of 55.1 billion Ghana Cedis. Dr. Ato Forson however, indicated that Minority will organize similar demonstration since the Governor has refused to appear to receive their petition.
“We will hold you accountable particularly, the governor. We are demanding his exit and now that he has decided to disrespect us, we will not present our petition. We will go and come back again”, he added.
#OccupyBoG demonstration was organized by the Minority Caucus in Parliament, other political parties, pressure group Arise Ghana, among other groups to demand the immediate resignation of the governor of the Bank of Ghana and his deputies over what they described as mismanagement of the BoG.
