The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has become the first university in Ghana and the West African region to launch a fully virtual university through its partnership with Astra Learning Incorporated.
The official launch of the Astra e-Campus platform took place during a press conference on Monday, 3 August 2026, at the New Academic Board Chamber of the University of Cape Coast.
The newly elected Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, speaking at a press conference, stated that the initiative forms part of the UCC’s digital transformation agenda and is expected to expand access to quality higher education for students in Ghana and across the world.
He said the partnership represents a strategically sound and forward-looking opportunity for the University of Cape Coast.
“This initiative will usher our university into a new era of digital innovation, broadening access to quality education, and reinforcing our standing as a leader,” he continued.
Thorough Due Diligence
Professor Aheto explained that the partnership followed extensive due diligence, including the establishment of an ad hoc committee and a study visit to the University of Malawi to assess the operational model.
Prof. Aheto commended Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan and his advisory committee for leading the project’s due diligence process.
According to him, the high-level delegation visited the University of Malawi from February 12 to 15, 2026, engaging extensively with institutional leaders and the Astral Learning team to gain firsthand insights into the model in practice.
He assured stakeholders that Astra e-Campus will complement, rather than replace, the University’s existing modes of programme delivery while helping to improve access to higher education and address challenges such as student accommodation.
Governance and Leadership Support
The Chairman of the UCC governing council, Justice William Atuguba, observed the evolving trends of the contemporary world and the need to adapt education to suit the associated changes.
In his welcome address at the official launch of the Astra e-Campus platform, he underscored the impact the initiative will make on tertiary education.
He expressed hope emphasizing “I have no doubt that this will be very welcome news to both the teaching staff and the student staff, and even in general…”
Justice Atuguba praised the new Vice-Chancellor for initiating and driving this project to completion during his term as acting VC, confirming his full support for the successful project.
Flexible Learning for Professionals
The Chief Executive Officer of Astra Learning Incorporated, Dr. Jeff Bordes emphasized that the launch of the UCC Astra e- Campus removes the need for professionals to sacrifice jobs or family time to commute to campus for higher education.
He believes that by offering fully online degrees with the same faculty and academic standards, the platform will allow Ghanaians and global students to apply and complete their studies entirely remotely.

The platform serves as a digital bridge to expand access to higher education, allowing undiscovered talent, especially in underserved rural areas, to pursue degrees without the constraint of physical lecture halls.
Accreditation and Target Enrollment
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has secured GTEC approval to establish a Virtual Campus project in partnership with Astra Learning.
Also, the university has accredited roughly 36 postgraduate programmes (Master’s, PhD, and DBA) and expects to enroll its first cohort in October 2026, aiming for an annual target of 10,000 students as the platform grows.
