Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the communication manager at the Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central and Western Region, has cautioned water users in households, washing bays, and institutions to avoid indulging in illegal water connections.
He emphasized that unregistered connections and tampering with Ghana Water Company Limited meters result in huge financial losses for the country.
He said there is a widespread illegal connection in which many bypass the approved procedure to avoid paying bills for water usage.
“So, he sees somebody who can connect water for him without coming to Ghana water company to go through the documentary process, so that his name will come into our database for us to read his meter and bring him bills.”
The communication manager emphasized that even those with a legal connection utilize these methods to avoid paying the full amount of bills for water used in their facilities.
However, he attributed the problem to the availability of fake water meters openly sold in markets and installed in some households, allowing individuals to use water without paying water bills.
Speaking on ATL FM’s Atlantic Wave, he warned the public against purchasing fake water meters or employing the services of unqualified persons to connect water in their homes, and offices among others.
“If you have any connection without any paper or documentary evidence and you are not in our database and don’t bring you a bill, then it is an illegal connection.”
He further stressed that this results in a lack of accurate metering and building, creating problems for the overall water management system.
Nana Yaw Barima Barnie pleaded with the public to desist from illegal water connections and encouraged them to follow the proper legal procedures for registering their water connections with Ghana Water Company Limited.
