Executives of Teacher unions within pre-tertiary institutions across the country have directed union members to withdraw their services effective July 4.

This follows government’s failure to respond to their call on payment of the cost of living allowances (COLA) which is 20% of their basic salary paid them.

At a joint press conference Monday morning, executives of Teacher unions took their turns to declare indefinite strike action.

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Angel Carbonu emphasized saying “I Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers direct all teachers and non-teaching staff in the Ghana Education Service, Pre-Tertiary sector to withdraw all our services from both the classroom and the offices.”

General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah also said “we can no longer bear the hardship. Even more so, we reject the inequality of salaries in the public services of this country. We have been compelled under the current circumstances to publicly communicate to Ghanaians on our intention to go on strike, having gone past the June 30, 2022 deadline [that] we gave government for the payment of the Cost of Living Allowance.”

The Unions comprising Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) are expected to withdraw their services until further notice.
