The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated GHS 100,000 to the Konkomba Education Endowment Fund (KEEF), which he launched on Monday at the University of Ghana Business School.

The Konkomba Education Endowment Fund, an initiative of the Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA), seeks to assist underprivileged but talented students, particularly Nkpankpando girls.

It was backed by notable and distinguished persons from Ghana’s northern region.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, former Vice Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress, gave Gh50,000 to the fund on behalf of former President John Mahama and opposition members of parliament.

Dominic Nitiwul, the Defence Minister, also contributed Gh60,000 to the charity.

Dr. Bawumia, who spoke as a guest speaker at the KEEF’s launch, praised the chiefs and people of Konkomba, as well as the Komkomba Youth Association, for establishing the fund.

“I’m excited by the initiative and by extension any such initiative geared towards the development of the human capital of our citizens”.

He said “human capital is what transforms people and nations”.

“If it were natural resources that made the difference, then Africa would’ve been the most advanced continent by now. But, it’s human resource that makes the difference”.

He went on to say that the government’s investment in education, particularly in youth, will stimulate growth and development.

“It’s hard for any country to achieve sustainable development without substantial investment in human capital”.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, speaking on behalf of former President John Mahama, said that education must be offered holistically for a clearly defined goal.

“Focusing on any one level of education to the detriment of the others, or roping them in as an afterthought, will set the stage for unnecessary confusion with huge social cost”.

She encouraged everyone to participate in the decision-making process, even if it seemed dry.

“What should Ghana’s education be like some 20 years from now? She inquired.

She said that there must be stakeholder talks to find answers to the education sector’s teething challenges since the consequences touch everyone.
