The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD) here at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel has held its maiden virtual public lecture on “Gender and Human Trafficking.
According to the Director of CEGRAD, Dr. Mrs. Georgina Yaa Oduro, the subject of human trafficking is a societal problem that is often gendered which needs in-depth deliberations in order to provide suggestions and solution to reduce the spate.
On her part, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Francisca Dora Edu-Buandoh intimated that human trafficking is demeaning and must be conventionally condemned.
“When people decide to change their abode and go to another place to live there, they live out of their own accord, they also decide where they want to go. But that is not so with human trafficking. I will say that it is modern day slavery, it is demeaning and a crime in many countries, men, women and children of all ages, people from all races and background can become victims o this crime and we need as a society look at it seriously, educate the public and also advocate so that we bring this evil phenomenon to an end. I hope we all continue to do that so that every human can live with dignity”, she stated.
In a presentation on gender and human trafficking, a Senior lecturer with the department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Razak Imoro Jaha noted that the adverse effects of poverty motivate individuals to venture into human trafficking where most victims are sexually exploited leaving them in a state of trauma.
