40 missing ECG containers recovered in Northern Region as investigations widen

Security agencies have made significant progress in the investigation into the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Forty of the missing containers have been located in a warehouse in Pong-Tamale, a town in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern Region.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, disclosed the latest development during an interview on Joy FM on Thursday, March 26, 2025. According to him, National Security and other law enforcement agencies traced the containers to a facility owned by an Indian businessman.

How the Missing Containers Were Tracked

Authorities have been pursuing leads on the whereabouts of the missing ECG containers, which were initially reported to have vanished under suspicious circumstances.

The breakthrough came after weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance, which led security forces to the warehouse in Pong-Tamale.

Mr. Jinapor explained that the warehouse owner claimed to have legally purchased the containers last year. However, investigations are ongoing to determine the authenticity of this claim and whether any fraudulent transactions were involved.

“All 40 containers have been confiscated and are being transported to a secured location as part of the broader investigation,” the minister stated.

Criminal Investigations Underway

The discovery has triggered a larger inquiry into the potential involvement of multiple individuals or entities in the disappearance of the ECG containers.

Law enforcement officers are expanding their search to other suspected locations where more of the missing containers might be hidden.

“There are reports of some other locations where intelligence is being gathered,” Mr. Jinapor revealed. “Authorities will trace all of them, recover the containers, and ensure that those responsible face prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction.”

The case has sparked intense scrutiny, with growing concerns over how such a large quantity of state-owned equipment could go missing without detection.

Analysts say this case highlights potential weaknesses in the oversight and management of state assets, particularly within ECG.

Government Vows to Hold Perpetrators Accountable

Mr. Jinapor cautioned against politicizing the issue, stressing that the government’s priority is to retrieve the missing containers and ensure justice is served.

“Let me just say this: when we start prosecuting these people, let nobody say we are witch-hunting. These are properties of the state. We will use every legal means to recover them and hold those behind it to account,” he declared.

He further assured Ghanaians that his ministry, in collaboration with security agencies, remains committed to tracking down all missing containers and preventing such incidents in the future.

The missing ECG containers are believed to have contained essential electrical materials intended for various national projects.

The revelation of their disappearance had sparked public outcry, with citizens demanding accountability and swift action from authorities.

As investigations deepen, many await further updates on the fate of the remaining missing containers and whether high-profile individuals may be implicated in the scandal.
