A total of 570, 461candidates will sit for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), starting today, July 8, 2024.
This announcement follows the release of fifty-five million, eight hundred and seventy-three thousand, six hundred and eighty-nine cedis eighty-seven pesewas (GHC55,873,689.87) to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) by the government.
At a press conference in Accra, Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC National Office, stated that the government is arranging to release the remaining examination fees to the Council.
He said“Arrangements are being made for the release of the remainder of the examination fees”
According to him, Staff of the Council, Ghana Education Service, NAT personnel from the Ghana Police Service, National Security, National Intelligence Bureau, and external monitoring agents have been recruited by the Council to monitor the examinations.
He said these personnel will carry identification cards on them as such supervisors are to request for these cards.
“We urge supervisors to request for these cards if they are suspicious of any persons purporting to be monitors.”
Mr. Kapi mentioned that candidates will begin with English Language and conclude with Arabic by Monday, July 15, 2024.
Of the total candidates, 282,648 are males and 286,447 are females, with 19,506 schools participating.
This year’s figure represents a 5.29 per cent decrease compared to the 2023 entry figure of 600,900.
The examination will be conducted at 2,123 locations nationwide, with 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors, and 19,973 invigilators ensuring a smooth process.
WAEC has also registered 1,366 private candidates candidates, with 735 being males and 631 females.
This year’s figure is 25.7 per cent less compared to the 2023 entry figure of 1,839. Fifteen centres, mainly in regional capitals, will be used for the BECE for private candidates.
