Tufohen of Oguaa traditional area, Nana Kwame Adu VI, has bemoaned the gradual loss of influence by traditional rulers in the Ghanaian society.
The 1992 constitution fully recognizes traditional councils as established by customary law and usage. Explicitly, Article 270 says Parliament shall have no power to enact any law which-confers on any person or authority the right to accord or withdraw recognition to or from a chief for any purpose whatsoever; or in any way detracts or derogates from the honor and dignity of the institution of chieftaincy.
Regardless of these provisions and more in the constitution, Nana Kwame Adu VI believes politicians in their scheming have reduced the powers of the traditional rulers hence there is little reverence for their stools or skins.

Nana Kwame Adu VI made this assertion on ATL FM’s Leadership Dialogue segment as he shared his view on chieftaincy roles in recent times.
He said “politicians have erased the powers of the chiefs to cat scratch in the constitution to the extent that when a chief calls you, you can chose to attend or not. It will to take a court order for the person to attend, what influence is that?”
This he said is contributing to the lawless in the country, adding that would require a deliberate attempt from the politicians to involve them in the leadership of the country to make the situation better.
“We are at the grass root, the basic foundations of the structure of society are the chiefs and so they need to consult us.”
Nana Kwame Adu VI was also quick to add that some rulers are to blame for this development because they have relinquished the power they wield.
