Ghana’s inclusive education policy defines the strategic path of the government for the education of all children with special educational needs.
This requires all stakeholders to address the diverse needs of different groups in the Ghanaian education system under the universal design for learning.
It is in light of this policy that the Rotary Club of Cape Coast Central has donated some educational items including textbooks, coloring books, pencils, coloring pencils, whiteboard markers, among others to the Aboom School for Special Needs in Cape Coast to enhance teaching and learning.
Speaking at the donation ceremony held at the school’s premises the president of Rotary Club Cape Coast Central, Madam Lawrencia Entsuah stated that the gesture is necessitated by the need to fulfill one of the seven focal points of the group which is to improve basic education and literacy.
The seven focal points include Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution, Disease Prevention, and Treatment, Water and Sanitation, and Maternal and Child Health.
Others include Basic Education and Literacy and Economic and Community Development.
According to her, the club will not renege on its efforts to continue supporting basic education, especially for children with special educational needs.
She, however, called on the general public to contribute their quota to promoting inclusive education in Ghana.
“We are appealing to the public that they need a minibus to transport them because sometimes they get missing on their way to school or on their way back to their various homes. Sometimes they go as far as Takoradi, that’s the Western region. They get lost, and we are appealing to the public to help” she emphasized.
On her part, the Headmistress of Aboom School for Special Needs, Madam Mary Osei expressed gratitude for the kind gesture and asked that others join in giving to support the progress of the school.
She mentioned some pressing needs of the school that needed quick attention such as the acquisition of land to relocate the school and an improved transport system to aid in conveying the students to and out of school.
Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services through charity and volunteerism.
