A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Francis Andoh says efforts are being made to inculcate knowledge among students across the country to enable them to understand governments rolled out initiatives concerning marketing in Ghana.
According to Dr. Andoh, about 24% of Ghanaians can be categorized as poor and this has placed a mandate on the association to see to it that a means can be created to lessen poverty if not to eradicate it.
In this regard, the Association of Economic Students of the School of Economic Studies at the University of Cape Coast has rolled out exercises towards its 25th-anniversary celebrations with a focus on minimizing poverty.
Dr. Francis Andoh explained that growth is important in every economy as it reduces poverty depending on its distributional patterns and sectorial composition on the growth.
“If you want to achieve poverty reduction, then your growth must target sectors that employ a lot of the poor. In Ghana, we have the services sector driving our growth. But when it comes to the sector that employs a lot of people, and for that matter, the poor people, it is our Agric sector, but it is that sector that is contributing the least to our growth.”
Shedding light on ATLFM’s ATLANTIC WAVE on how poverty can be reduced in Ghana, Dr. Francis Andoh indicated that it is important Ghana begins to look at macroeconomic policies that will target the Agric Sector where the majority of people are employed.
The 25th-anniversary celebrations are scheduled to be held from June 15 to 24th June 2023.
The history of the Association of Economic Students dates back to 25th May 1997 when it was formed by Dr. Charles Amoh Yartey, currently with the International Monetary Fund.
The vision of the association is to enable its members to drive a knowledge-based economy both locally and internationally.
According to the President of the Association of Economic Students of the School of Economic Studies at the University of Cape Coast, Ekow Orleans de-Graft the realization of the association’s vision over the years is found in their achievement of having their alumni dotted across organizations such as the Ghana Statistical Service, local and foreign universities among others.
