Victims of the Bogoso Appiate explosion are being transported to different health institutions located outside of the community.
This is due to the disaster’s overburdening of Bogoso’s healthcare facilities.
As officials mobilize rescue operations, 17 individuals have been confirmed deceased, while 59 wounded people have been rescued in the tragic blast.
Dr. Joseph Darko, a Clinical Coordinator of Apinto Government Hospital, said that five injured people admitted to his institution, for example, are responding to treatment.
“There were varying degrees of injury. Of course, some people were dead. Others are injured and some of them had to be evacuated. The closest facility where the incident happened is a health center where the level of care couldn’t support the injuries that occurred, so some of the injured had to be evacuated to hospitals in Tarkwa.”
“I think there is a private hospital in Bogoso where some of the injured people were sent to. We went in there and evacuated five people who needed to be evacuated to our facility, and they are all stable now”, he said on Eyewitness News.
According to a statement from the Information Ministry, 42 of the 59 wounded people are getting care, with some in critical condition.
It, therefore, described some of the government’s current actions to deal with the crisis.
According to preliminary police investigations, a truck transporting explosives to a mining site collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the explosion.
Meanwhile, Chirano Gold Mines has verified that the vehicle involved in the incident was on its way to the mine.
According to the mining firm, the vehicle belongs to mining services contractor MAXAM.
To prevent a secondary explosion, the government has sent a combined team of police and military explosive specialists to assess the situation and implement the necessary safeguards.
Early indications show that multiple buildings and structures in various parts of town have been damaged, and plans have been put in place to guarantee that stranded community members are cared for in the following days.
