President Akufo Addo has eased some of the restrictions imposed on the country in the bid to contain the spread of the  Coronavirus pandemic. These include the reopening of schools for final year students in the Junior High Schools, Senior high schools and Universities.

University final year students will be going back to school on 15th June 2020 while final year Senior High School students are expected to resume on 22nd June 2020.

Junior High School students who are preparing for their final examinations will also go back to school on Monday, June 29, 2020. However, all other educational institutions other than the final years will remain closed.

From June 5th 2020, Muslims can begin their usual Friday service with a restricted number of not more than one hundred people per service. Churches will also begin their normal service on 7th June 2020 with the same number of attendants per service.

Members will be required to wear face masks while adhering to all the safety protocols outlined by the Ghana health service. Members who attend any of these services will have their details taken for contact tracing purposes.

“With effect from Friday, 5th June, we will begin stage one of the process of easing restrictions. An abridged format for religious services can commence. Twenty-five per cent attendance with a maximum number of congregants can worship at a time in church or mosque with the mandatory one-meter rule of social distancing between congregants” he announced.

Private burials, weddings, workshops and conferences can now be held with not more than 100 people attending.

The President announced the easing of restrictions in his 10th televised address to the nation on the Covid 19 pandemic. According to him, the easing of these restrictions was arrived at after series of stakeholder consultations.

He, however, indicated that any institution that will be found violating any of the “safety guidelines will have its activities closed and the necessary sanctions applied”.

So far, Ghana’s case stands at 8070 positive cases,  2947 recoveries, and 36 deaths.
