One more person who was on board the vehicle involved in the accident at Asuboi, near Suhum in the Eastern region has been confirmed dead bringing the death toll to 10.
The deceased, according to authorities of the Suhum Government Hospital is among the 5 males and 5 females confirmed dead so far.
Seven victims who sustained life-threatening injuries are also still on admission.
The emergency nurse at the Suhum government hospital, Kwaku Agyeman Ayerakwaah who confirmed this to the media, indicated that 33 victims were brought to the hospital.
He said two victims in critical condition who are also students of the University of Education, Winneba have been transferred to the Koforidua Central Hospital while 14 have been treated and discharged.
He indicated that “the 14 people sustained lacerations, aberrations and had musculoskeletal pains. Two people are currently are here with fractures, their legs have been mobilized and then one of them, a 22-year-old lady who is having a pelvic fracture is now currently being seen to”.
The Hyundai universe commercial bus with registration number AK 324-22 with passengers on board from Sunyani to Accra crashed head-on with an articulated truck parked off the road at Asuboi, a section of the road on the Accra-Kumasi highway.
Nine persons died on the spot while the tenth person died at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the dean of students at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Bernard Bingab was at the Suhum government hospital with the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council to check and identify the students.
He was unable to confirm the exact number of students among the ten casualties since some students were still not accounted for per the number of occupants of the commercial bus.
The police preliminary investigations reveal that the commercial bus driver who is believed to have been sleeping failed to observe traffic ahead, resulting in the collision.
