Nigerian music executive and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has opened up about the profound impact Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr has had on his life, describing the artiste as a “dream Starrgirl.”
The music executive made the revelation on X while responding to an old photograph of Ayra Starr shared by a social media user, who praised Don Jazzy for playing a major role in the singer’s career.
The user, @_Fabianszn, suggested that Don Jazzy had “saved” Ayra Starr from remaining in her previous career path.

Ayra Starr, Nigerian Afrobeat sensation
Rather than accepting all the credit for Ayra Starr’s success, Don Jazzy used the opportunity to acknowledge the impact she has also had on him.
“I bless the day I was shown her Instagram freestyle o,” Don Jazzy wrote.
He added: “She has most definitely changed my own life too. And she has been nothing but a dream Starrgirl.”
Ayra Starr’s journey with Don Jazzy began after her performances on social media caught the attention of the music executive.
Don Jazzy has previously explained that he was actively looking for young talent capable of connecting with a new generation of music listeners when Ayra Starr’s Instagram profile was brought to his attention.
An Instagram freestyle eventually convinced him that the young singer had something special. He subsequently reached out to her and began the process that would lead to her joining Mavin Records.
Although Ayra Starr was signed in 2020, Mavin officially unveiled her to the public in January 2021. At the time, Don Jazzy described her as an exceptional young talent with the potential to become an international star.
Her self-titled debut EP followed shortly after her unveiling, marking the beginning of a career that would rapidly expand beyond Nigeria.

Nigerian Music Executive, Don Jazzy,
Since joining Mavin, Ayra Starr has developed into one of the leading names in the new generation of African music.
Her breakthrough reached another level with songs such as “Rush”, while subsequent releases have strengthened her presence on the international music scene. Her career has also earned major international recognition, including Grammy nominations and other global honours.
Don Jazzy’s latest comments therefore offer a different perspective on their professional relationship.
While the music executive played a significant role in giving Ayra Starr an international platform, he now acknowledges that the artiste’s success has also contributed to his own journey.
His remarks underline the mutual impact between an artiste and the executive who discovers and develops that talent.
For Don Jazzy, what began with a young woman’s Instagram freestyle has grown into one of Mavin’s notable success stories—and, by his own admission, a journey that has changed his life as well.
The comments come as Ayra Starr continues to expand her musical profile. Her third studio album, Starrgirl, was released on August 14, 2026, further adding to a catalogue that has helped establish her as a major contemporary Afrobeats artiste.
For Don Jazzy, however, the story appears to go beyond discovering a successful artiste.
It is a reminder that sometimes, the talent you discover and invest in can also transform the person who discovered it.
And in Ayra Starr, Don Jazzy appears to have found exactly that—a “dream Starrgirl” whose journey has become an important part of his own story.
