The High Court, Criminal Division 4 in Accra, is set to hear an application for bail pending appeal filed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The application, which was filed on August 6, 2026, at 1:40 p.m., is seeking an order for Wontumi to be admitted to bail while his appeal against his conviction and 20-year prison sentence is determined.
A Notice of Motion from the High Court of Justice, Criminal Division 4, indicates that the application was filed pursuant to Section 96(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30) and Section 33(1) of the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459).
The court document, with suit number CR/0004/2026, states that counsel for the first appellant/applicant will move the court to grant bail to Wontumi, who is currently incarcerated at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.
The motion is expected to be heard on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., or soon thereafter as counsel for the first and third appellants may be heard.
The application was filed by Samuel Atta Akyea, Esq., of Zoe, Akyea & Co., on behalf of Wontumi and Akonta Mining Company Limited, with copies served to the Office of the Attorney-General and the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.
The case, The Republic v. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako @ Wontumi, Kwame Antwi (at large), and Akonta Mining Company Limited, follows Wontumi’s conviction and sentencing by the High Court after he was found guilty on six charges connected to illegal mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The High Court is now expected to consider whether the applicant has met the legal requirements to be granted bail pending the determination of his appeal. If successful, the bail would allow Wontumi to remain out of custody while the appeal process continues.
