A viral social media video showing a man sweeping plastic waste onto a public road during a downpour has resulted in a GH¢1,200 fine, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce sanitation regulations in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) confirmed that the offender, 27-year-old Benedict Ackah Dadzie, was sanctioned after Environmental Health Officers identified and arrested him following the circulation of the video online.
The incident occurred on Friday, June 19, and quickly attracted public attention after footage of the act spread across social media platforms.
Arrest Follows Viral Footage
According to the Assembly, investigations were launched after the video surfaced online, leading to Dadzie’s arrest on Monday, June 22.
During questioning, he admitted to sweeping plastic waste onto a public road, an act that contravenes Section 6(1) of the STMA (Cleansing) Bye-Law, 2017.
Officials said the offender accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse during the investigation process.
GH¢1,200 Fine Imposed
The Assembly subsequently imposed a spot fine of GH¢1,200 in line with its sanitation enforcement procedures.
In addition to the fine, Dadzie was required to sign a written undertaking committing himself to refrain from littering and any other activities that undermine environmental sanitation efforts within the metropolis.

The Assembly said the action was intended to reinforce compliance with sanitation regulations and deter similar offences.
Sanitation Enforcement Intensifies
STMA indicated that the sanction forms part of broader efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and strengthen enforcement of local sanitation bylaws.
Officials stressed that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes significantly to drainage blockages and flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
The Assembly warned that individuals who violate sanitation regulations would continue to face prosecution or administrative sanctions.
Public Urged to Support Cleanliness Efforts
Residents and businesses have been encouraged to support waste management initiatives by using approved refuse containers and subscribing to authorised waste collection services.
According to the Assembly, maintaining a clean environment requires cooperation from all members of the public.
Commitment to a Cleaner Metropolis
STMA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a cleaner and healthier environment through public education and strict enforcement of sanitation regulations.
The Assembly believes that stronger compliance with environmental bylaws will help improve sanitation standards, reduce flooding risks and enhance the overall quality of life within the metropolis.
Officials say the latest enforcement action should serve as a reminder that sanitation offences carry consequences and will not be tolerated.
